New York State Bar Association Publishes New Volume of Ethics Decisions

8.27.2024

By Jennifer Andrus

Lawyers and scholars have relied on the New York State Bar Association’s ethics opinions to navigate tricky ethical and legal issues since 1952.  But now, for the first time, members can buy a fully searchable electronic volume of more than two decades of opinions in a new reference book.

“This new volume will make our work more accessible and user friendly for lawyers and researchers both in New York and around the world,” said Brenda Dorsett, chair of the NYSBA Committee on Professional Ethics. “It will be an invaluable resource for anyone who practices in New York.”

The dozens of ethics opinions released each year by the committee are the most anticipated and widely read articles produced by the association. They are thorough and comprehensive and benefit from the debate and discussion of an entire committee of ethics experts. They offer guidance for lawyers who are facing some of the most perplexing issues in their legal practices. The issues tackled in our opinions are often reprinted and gain national media attention.

Recent opinions include:

  • Should You Share Legal Fees with a Non-Lawyer?
  • Is it OK for Your Client to Record Your Conversations?
  • Paying for a Recommendation or a Referral
  • Conflict of Interest: Former District Attorney in the Public Defenders Office

This new volume is an easy reference to critical discussions of hundreds of the most vexing issues facing lawyers today. It is on sale for the membership price of $195 at nysba.org and would be a valuable resource for any practice. A print edition will be published later this year.
