Domenick Napoletano, president of the New York State Bar Association, issued the following statement about the alarming rise in hate crimes reported by the New York State Office of the Comptroller:

“I am saddened but unfortunately not surprised by the steady rise and alarming increase in hate crimes in New York State. It is painful to me personally to see fellow New Yorkers targeted. While the numbers are more troubling than ever, the hatred turned against our neighbors is regrettably nothing new. The New York State Bar Association has long studied the prevalence of racism, antisemitism and anti-Asian hate and has several recommendations for reversing these injustices. Hate should have no place in a civil society.”

Here are the association’s recommendations:

Report and Recommendations of the New York State Bar Association Task Force on Antisemitism and Anti-Asian Hate

Report and Recommendations of the Task Force on Advancing Diversity

Report and Recommendations of the New York State Bar Association Task Force on Racism, Social Equity and the Law
