Lauren Moskowitz received the Hon. Shira A. Scheindlin Award for Excellence in the Courtroom.
A mentor and role model whose leadership has inspired a generation of female attorneys was recently honored by the New York State Bar Association for her distinguished work as a litigator.
Lauren Moskowitz, partner at Cravath, Swaine & Moore, received the Hon. Shira A. Scheindlin Award for Excellence in the Courtroom while five esteemed associates were presented with Judge Judith Kaye Scholarships during the recent Commercial and Federal Litigation Section’s Taking The Lead program.
“Lauren epitomizes everything a great attorney should be. Her work ethic and leadership set a standard that any young lawyer should want to aspire to. She is smart, yet humble – ambitious yet selfless – and hard working yet courteous,” said Domenick Napoletano, president of the New York State Bar Association.
Robert H. Baron, also a partner at Cravath, Swaine & Moore, presented the award to Moskowitz.
“Lauren is a mentor and an inspiration to the younger lawyers who work with her,” he said. “The term I hear from young and old alike is ‘rock star’ – and that is the right word. As one of them said to me recently, ‘Lauren sets a standard that shows everyone else how it’s done. Not just the associates but the partners, too. Everyone on the trial team in one way or another wants to be like her when they grow up.’”
Moskowitz, who served as law clerk to Judge Scheindlin, successfully defended a pro bono client before the U.S. Supreme Court as an associate and represented Epic Games in its antitrust case against Google.
The Judge Kaye scholarships were presented to Nicole Clark of Wollmuth Maher & Deutsch, Kyra Ganswith of Barclay Damon, Amanda Grannis of Tannenbaum Helpern Syracuse & Hirschtritt, Swara Saraiya of MoloLamken and Elizabeth Sy of Rivkin Radler.
The Scheindlin Award was first handed out in 2016 and is presented annually in November, on or around the date when women received the right to vote in New York State in 1917. The award is bestowed upon a female litigator who has distinguished herself in the courtroom in either the federal or state courts in New York and who has shown a commitment to mentoring young attorneys in the legal community.
The Judge Kaye scholarships cover the cost of the recipients attending a session of the section’s Commercial Litigation Academy. The goal of the scholarship is to increase the number of women prepared to serve as first chair in large commercial cases.
The awards ceremony took place at the Daniel P. Moynihan United States Courthouse in New York City.
The Taking The Lead CLE program: Empowering Women Lawyers in Commercial Cases; Winning Strategies and Techniques for Trial preceded the awards ceremony. The program showcased methods of creating compelling opening and closing statements and direct and cross-examinations of witnesses through a re-enactment of an actual civil trial by commercial litigators. Prominent members of the judiciary critiqued the trial performances.
