Communicating Across Differences: Why Interrupting Biases Matter
Implicit bias exists when people unconsciously hold attitudes toward others or associate stereotypes with those not in their “in” group. Psychology indicates that human beings are prone to creating mental shortcuts as a means of recognizing patterns and applying generalizations. It is what kept our ancestors safe. However, it also means that most of us are living by outdated stereotypes and tropes about “others” within our relevant social groups. This program will be a candid discussion about the root causes of these biases and ways that we can recognize them when they arise, so we can interrupt them before they affect our communications and interactions with others.
