Vincent E. Doyle III of Buffalo, speaking on behalf of the New York State Bar Association, today called on the state Senate to confirm Rowan Wilson of New York City to a seat on the state Court of Appeals.

“Mr. Wilson possesses strong skills that we believe will serve him well as an associate judge,” Doyle testified at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in Albany. “He is well known among the lawyers and judges of this state for his intellect, diligence and professionalism.”

The New York State Bar Association repeatedly has found Wilson to be “well qualified,” its highest rating, to serve on the Court of Appeals, said Doyle, a former president of the Association and current chair of its 17-member Committee to Review Judicial Nominations.

Doyle noted that Wilson has been a partner at Cravath, Swaine & Moore in New York City since 1992 “where he has handled a wide variety of cases, including complex commercial and civil rights matters. Currently, he supervises the firm’s pro bono work.

He is board chair of the Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem, a public defense practice that seeks to provide both criminal defense and social service support for its clients.”

Wilson’s nomination by Governor Andrew Cuomo must be confirmed by the state Senate.

The 72,000-member New York State Bar Association is the largest voluntary state bar association in the nation. It was founded in 1876.
