The New York State Bar Association has named Pamela McDevitt as its next executive director. She currently is the director of the Law Practice and Technology Group at the American Bar Association (ABA).

“After an extensive and broad search, we are delighted to welcome Pamela McDevitt back to the Association as executive director,” said State Bar President Claire P. Gutekunst. “With her experience as a practicing attorney and a bar association executive who has focused on identifying and meeting the needs of members, Pam is the perfect person to move the Association forward toward our goals of serving our members, the legal profession and the public.”

As executive director, McDevitt will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Association and help implement policies adopted by its House of Delegates and Executive Committee. The Association has 125 employees at its Albany headquarters and nearby print shop.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to return to the New York State Bar Association,” McDevitt said. “I’m excited to work with the leadership and staff to strengthen the Association and further its mission.”

McDevitt succeeds David R. Watson, who stepped down as executive director in December 2016.

As director of the American Bar Association Law Practice and Technology Group, McDevitt oversees the operations of the Law Student Division, Young Lawyer Division, Law Practice Division, Legal Technology Resource Center, Senior Lawyer Division and Legal Career Central.

Immediately prior to joining the ABA in 2010, McDevitt served for four years as director of Law Practice Management at the New York State Bar Association. She previously was a practicing attorney in a law firm in Schenectady, NY, and served as a captain in the U.S. Army JAG Corps.

McDevitt is a graduate of Rivier University and earned her law degree from the University of New Hampshire School of Law.

The 74,000-member New York State Bar Association is the largest voluntary state bar association in the nation. It was founded in 1876.
