Introduction to Military Cultural Competency: A Guide for Lawyers
Military Veterans undergo an experience far removed from the vast majority of those that represent them. Veteran values, while influenced by those of civilian counterparts, are distinct from those of society as a whole. Further, the values that make up military culture are oft expressed in a seemingly incomprehensible abyss of acronyms, jargon, and camouflaged meanings. The military experience, particularly if it involves combat, indelibly shapes the veteran and has implications for both their legal situation and their interactions with counsel. This practical program explores that culture by examining military structures and norms and their post-service effects upon America’s veterans.
