12:50 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.         Immigration for Criminal Lawyers

The panel will explore the topic of asylum seekers in light of recent reports from the Buffalo News. Approximately 600 migrants were relocated from New York City to the Buffalo area, with four facing arrests for alleged violent crimes. This raises questions about their eligibility and admissibility for lawful permanent residence, given their potential dispersion across Upstate counties.

The focus will be on understanding the legal status of asylum seekers, the criteria for ineligibility, and orders of protection's role in removal proceedings. Recent developments, including the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in U.S. v Texas, have reinstated the Biden Administration's enforcement policies, potentially leading to increased detainer issuance against individuals and affecting legal strategies and client cases.
