Health Law Section Fall Meeting 2021 (Day 1)
The Health Law Section 2-day Fall CLE Program will examine and invite discussion about a range of hotly debated and cross-cutting issues in health care today, including long-term care, maternal mortality and morbidity, data privacy, and vaccination mandates and equity and access. Speakers will bring a New York perspective to the focus of their presentations and panels, addressing practical skills for attorneys in counseling and representing clients in the various areas of the law.

I. US. Supreme Court and Disparate Treatment: Impact on Health Care Disparities
Speaker: Lisa D. Hayes, Esq., One Brooklyn Health Systems, Inc., Associate General Counsel
Presenter will address the Supreme Court’s history regarding racial disparate treatment, the judicial history of disparate racial treatment on healthcare institutions, and how the law of disparate treatment continued to impact racial disparities.
II. Federal Response to Maternal Morbidity and Mortality
Speaker: Tiffany M. Wiggins, MD, MPH, FACOG, Medical Officer, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
Presenter will address the national imperative regarding racial disparities in maternal morbidity and mortality, and key CMS/HHS efforts to address these disparities.
III. Overcoming Racial Disparities in Maternal Morbidity and Mortality: Considerations of Equity, Quality and Safety
Speaker: Louis Hart, M.D., Yale New Haven Health System, Medical Director of Health Equity, Office of Clinical Operations, Office of Health Equity
Presenter will discuss systemic/structural racial inequities/forces that impact racial disparities, the impact of disparate treatment on equity, quality and safety, and the strategies to overcome such forces.
IV. New York State Response to Racial Disparities in Maternal Morbidity and Mortality
Speaker: Lorraine Ryan, Esq., Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA), Senior Vice President, Legal, Regulatory and Professional Affairs
Presenter will discuss the NY Governor’s Task Force on Maternal Morbidity and Mortality, and the current legislative agenda for Maternal Morbidity and Mortality.
