The Legislative Process in NYS: How “Revenge Porn” Became a Crime (Webinar)
As attorneys, we are charged with knowing, applying, and obeying laws. But have you ever wondered how these laws are enacted in New York State? Using a 2019 amendment to the Penal Code that criminalizes the non-consensual sharing or publication of an intimate image, also known as “revenge porn," we will walk through how personal humiliation and harassment led to an idea that gained the attention of the Legislature and garnered the votes to end up as a bill on the Governor’s desk.
The panelists taking us on this journey include Lindsey Song, Esq., of Sanctuary for Families, who represents survivors; Carrie Goldberg, Esq., who lobbied for the revenge porn law; and Senator Monica R. Martinez, who sponsored the bill. We hope you join the Women in Law Section and the panelists on this path to a penal code amendment.
