What New York City’s Biometric Data Laws Mean for the Real Estate Industry

What New York City’s Biometric Data_675

Devices that collect and use biometric data have become increasingly popular during the pandemic, as a contactless way to verify the identity of employees, tenants, and customers.  As biometric data collection has become more common, the public, and legislators, have become more aware of the privacy and security risks associated with this highly sensitive data.  The recently enacted NYC Biometric Identifier Information Ordinance and the Tenant Data Privacy Act have changed the data collection landscape for many businesses in New York City that rely on fingerprints, voice and face scans, and other biometric data in their operations.

Our speakers will discuss:

  • What biometric information is;
  • How it is used in the hospitality, retail, and real estate industries;
  • What businesses need to know about the NYC Biometric Identifier Information Ordinance and the Tenant Data Privacy Act;
  • Potential liability and private causes of action and
  • Ideas for developing a framework for compliance.
