The impact of Web3 on the practice of law will be the focus of an upcoming program that is being sponsored by the New York State Bar Association’s Task Force on Emerging Digital Finance and Currency.

The program: “Web3 & The Metaverse: Preparing Your Practice & Clients for the Newest Digital Revolution” is being hosted by The Metaverse Collaborative at New York University’s School of Professional Studies. Journalists are invited to attend but should contact David Alexander at [email protected].

The event will take place on Dec. 16 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at NYU’s Kimmel Center for University Life, 60 Washington Square, Suite 605, in New York City.

Art in the Metaverse, Securities Law and Regulation on Digital Assets & Currency, Company/Client Legal Needs in Web3 and the Impacts on All Practice Areas of Law comprise the program’s four panel discussions.

Hon. Anthony Cannataro, acting chief judge of the New York State Court of Appeals, will offer opening remarks while Sherry Levin Wallach, president of the New York State Bar Association and a member of the NYU Metaverse Collaborative Advisory Board, and Jackie J. Drohan, co-chair of the association’s task force, will introduce the speakers.

“Web3 and the metaverse will have implications on all aspects of our lives both professionally and personally,” said Levin Wallach. “The rapid growth of the metaverse, Web3 and the digital economy present a confluence of issues for the legal community. It is important for lawyers and judges to engage effectively in this rapidly evolving space.”

Marc Beckman, senior fellow NYU Metaverse, and best-selling author of “Comprehensive Guide: NFTs, Digital Artwork, and Blockchain Technology, mentioned that the technology will have major ramifications on the legal profession.

“Web3 and the Metaverse’s underlying technology will positively disrupt the legal profession on a broad scale, including contracts, real property and securities to intellectual property and beyond. This movement has already started. Attorneys who are interested in learning about how this critical moment will impact their clients lives as well as their own legal practices should attend this event,“ said Beckman.

Beckman and Caroline Moustakis, senior vice president and associate general counsel at Sotheby’s, will host a fireside chat “Basics of Web3: Digital Currencies, NFTs & Blockchain” that will lead into the four panel discussions.

The non-CLE event is free to attend.
