The New York State Bar Association is excited to present its upcoming Virtual Convention for January, 2021. While we will all miss bringing together attorneys and legal professionals from across New York State, and all of the in-person interactions that come with a more traditional Annual Meeting, we are committed to working just as diligently to provide the best experience for all of our attendees in this new virtual format. The engaging programming provided by our talented Sections and Committees, along with some of the most respected presenters in the legal field, will continue to make this Meeting a must-attend!

While everyone in attendance will be experiencing our Annual Meeting in this new virtual convention format, we’ve focused on not straying too far from what attendees appreciated and looked forward to during all of our past in-person conferences. NYSBA’s 26 Sections will continue to offer targeted programs and events for not only their Section members, but any attorney that would like to experience what they have to offer. Select NYSBA Committees will also be a part of this year’s 2-week schedule, offering the most up-to-date and relevant programming based on their Committee’s area of focus.

With an informative Presidential Summit planned, multiple virtual receptions, an exciting “Piano Bar” evening event, a trivia competition, the beloved awards receptions, an abundance of information and resources from our sponsoring partners…and even yoga, start blocking off your calendar for January right now and register for Annual Meeting today!

We made some updates to the upcoming Annual Meeting pricing structure that many of you may have grown accustomed to.

  • We have eliminated the General Registration Fee for the 2021 Annual Meeting.
  • Each Section or Committee continues to have its own registration fee, based on whether it is a half-day or full-day event.
  • Section Members receive an additional discount, that is reflected above, so if you’ve been considering joining a Section, now would be a worthwhile (and cost-effective) time to do so.
  • Sections and Committees holding single-day programs (4 MCLE Credits or less) will adhere to half-day pricing fee.
  • Sections and Committees holding multi-day programs (5+ MCLE Credits) will adhere to the full-day pricing fee.

As we continue to announce and post the various Special Events that will be taking place during Annual Meeting, including the Presidential Summit, you’ll notice that registration for those come with no additional charge. As long as you first register for one of the Section or Committee programs, you may reap the benefits of signing up for a handful of complimentary programs throughout the 2-week period, many of them offering MCLE Credits, so your registration cost will be stretched even further.

IMPORTANT: For those of you that wish to attend multiple Section or Committee programs, we are extending a discount of 25% off the pricing of 2 or more programs, however you must contact our MRC Department directly and register over the phone.

HOW TO  REGISTER:

Step 1: Review the “Schedule” tabs on the left navigation, either by Day, or by Section/Committee

Step 2: Find the program you are interested in and proceed with the registration prompts provided

The COVID-19 Pandemic: Legal, Constitutional, and Public Health Issues
Wednesday, January 27, 2021
2:00 PM – 4:00 PM

2.0 MCLE Credits [2.0 Areas of Professional Practice]

This program is transitional and is suitable for all attorneys including those newly admitted.

The COVID-19 public health crisis has affected all aspects of American life, altering travel, work, education – even everyday activities like buying groceries. Lawmakers and public health officials at both the state and federal level quickly implemented emergency orders at the onset of the crisis to stabilize the spread of the disease, and balance the precautions that public health and safety demand with recognition of constitutional, economic, and liberty interests. Now, after months of living with COVID-19, the efficacy and utility of these policies, and their corollary legal, constitutional, and public health impacts, can be deliberately examined. We invite you to attend this informative session.

Scott M. Karson, NYSBA President, Partner, Lamb & Barnosky, LLP

Speakers:
Prof. Erwin Chemerinsky, Dean and Jesse H. Choper Distinguished Professor of Law, UC Berkeley School of Law
Dr. Irwin Redlener, Director, Pandemic Resource and Response Initiative, Professor of Health Policy and Management and Pediatrics at the Columbia University Medical Center

Moderator:
Liz Benjamin, Managing Partner, Marathon Strategies

Registration is complimentary.

What is Escheatment? That is literally a multi-billion dollar question. Governments require organizations to remit property that has been abandoned or unclaimed after a period of time. Right now, custodians are holding over $50 billion dollars in money potentially owed to your company, a client’s company, a vendor’s company, your college, your local hospital, or favorite charity. Using proprietary software and experiential knowledge, Escheatment helps reunite funds with intended recipients.
