WHO WE ARE
The Environmental & Energy Law Section’s mission is to bring together members of the New York State Bar Association interested in environmental, land use, energy, health and safety, and related issues and topics, to further the education of the legal community, the public, and governmental and elected officials on legal, administrative and policy matters.
The Section also works to facilitate the making of public policy, and to provide networking opportunities between and among attorneys in private practice, government, corporations and consulting firms.

The Environmental & Energy Law Section has been at the forefront of introducing, monitoring, and evaluating legal and policy developments at both federal and New York State levels. Section members have the opportunity to contribute to these efforts through the work of Section Committees.
Please do not contact the Section liaison with a request for legal advice or an attorney referral. You can instead visit our ‘Public Resources’ or ‘Lawyer Referral Service’ page for this type of request.

Amy Kendall
Partner, Knauf Shaw LLP
Amy focuses her practice on water-related issues. She regularly counsels clients on State Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (SPDES) and federal/state wetland permitting and compliance. She advocates for clients on groundwater, surface water and drinking water contamination issues. Amy also handles matters involving title to and permitting for work on underwater lands, as well as disputes concerning riparian and littoral rights.
Amy assists her clients with permitting and compliance under New York’s Coastal Erosion Hazard Area Laws. She works with her municipal clients to create Local Waterfront Development Programs (LWRPs), as well as water, sewer and aquatic growth control districts. She crafts all types of local laws for her municipal clients, including those involving zoning and planning, the regulation of docks and mooring, and floodplains.
Much of Amy’s work involves federal and state environmental and land use litigation. For over 25 years, Amy has prosecuted and defended litigation under the Clean Water Act, Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), the State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA) and New York’s Oil Spill Act, as well as constitutional and common law tort claims.
Amy’s real estate law experience—including title examination—supports her litigation and transactional work and informs her approach to redevelopment issues. It also supports her volunteer work with JustCause, a legal service organization in Monroe County, representing clients that are purchasing their first homes from Greater Rochester Habitat For Humanity.
