The International Section of the New York State Bar Association brings together lawyers and legal professionals from New York and around the world who share an interest in international, comparative and cross-border law.

For many of us, the Section is much more than a place to attend programs. It is a community where professional relationships are built over time, where lawyers from different jurisdictions learn from one another, and where friendships and collaborations often grow naturally from the work we do together.

Our members include New York lawyers, international lawyers, in-house counsel, academics, public officials, law students and legal professionals involved in cross-border matters or interested in expanding their international perspective. What connects us is not only our work, but also our curiosity, our commitment to the profession, and our belief that meaningful relationships across jurisdictions make us better lawyers.

The Section offers many ways to become involved, through committees, chapters, publications, speaking opportunities, conferences, leadership initiatives and informal connections among members. Whether someone is an experienced practitioner, a young lawyer, a newly admitted attorney, an international lawyer, or a professional looking to build a stronger global network, the International Section can be a very valuable home within NYSBA.

As part of NYSBA, we also have an important opportunity to strengthen the Association’s international presence and to show the value that a truly global legal community can bring to its members. One of my goals is to help the Section be recognized as one of the leading international legal communities in the world — not only because of the caliber of its lawyers, but also because of the quality of its programs, the seriousness of its work, and the strength of the relationships it creates.

We are also working to make the Section more active and connected throughout the year. Our upcoming meetings reflect that commitment:

Executive Committee Retreat — Tarrytown, New York | June 5, 2026
A working retreat focused on our strategy, our committees and chapters, membership engagement, NYSBA integration, external relationships and the future of the Section.

Global Conference — Buenos Aires, Argentina | October 21–23, 2026
Our flagship international meeting, bringing together lawyers from New York, Latin America, Europe and other jurisdictions for substantive programs, networking and meaningful cross-border conversations.

NYSBA Annual Meeting — New York City | January 20, 2027
An important opportunity for International Section members to connect with NYSBA leadership, participate in Section programming and be part of the broader NYSBA community.

Regional Meeting — Copenhagen, Denmark | April 15-16, 2027
A more interactive regional meeting designed to encourage real discussion, closer connections and practical collaboration among lawyers working across the United States, Europe and other jurisdictions.

We invite members and prospective members to join us, stay connected and become active participants in the life of the Section. The International Section is strongest when members bring their ideas, their experience, their jurisdictions and their relationships into the conversation.

Together, we can continue building an International Section that is connected, active and valuable to lawyers around the world — a Section that reflects the best of NYSBA’s global reach and the strength of the relationships we create when we work across jurisdictions.

Helen Naves

Helen Naves

Partner, HNaves Advogados

São Paulo, Brazil

Helen Naves is a Brazilian and New York-qualified lawyer with more than 25 years of experience advising banks, financial institutions, companies, investors and international clients on banking, finance, capital markets, regulatory and cross-border matters.

Helen was born and raised in Uberaba, Minas Gerais, Brazil, a city in the countryside in the central part of the country. Her first meaningful international experience came early in life, when she lived in Huntington Woods, Michigan, as a Rotary International Exchange Student in 1994 and 1995. That year abroad had a lasting impact on her. It opened her eyes to different cultures, different ways of thinking, and the importance of building relationships across borders.

After returning to Brazil, Helen moved to São Paulo to study law at the University of São Paulo — USP, at the traditional Largo São Francisco Law School. Years later, she returned to the United States to pursue her LL.M. at Fordham Law School in New York, graduating with the Class of 2009. These experiences in Brazil and the United States helped shape a career that has always been connected to international clients, cross-border work and matters involving different legal systems.

Helen is the founder of HNaves Advogados, a São Paulo-based boutique law firm created in 2021. Through the firm, she offers senior-led, personal and strategic legal support to clients with Brazil-related needs. Her practice combines Brazilian legal and regulatory experience with New York law capability, allowing her to assist clients, families, companies, financial institutions and international advisors in matters involving Brazil, New York and other jurisdictions.

Over the years, Helen has worked on a broad range of matters involving banking regulation, foreign exchange, capital markets, financing transactions, treasury products, derivatives, structured finance, corporate and commercial matters, fintechs, payment institutions, digital asset businesses, international investments, cross-border wealth and succession planning coordination, governance matters and Brazil-related risk assessment.

Before founding her firm, Helen spent many years working in-house with banks and later in leading law firms, always advising financial institutions, companies, investors and international clients. This combination of in-house experience, law firm practice and entrepreneurial leadership gave her a practical and business-oriented perspective, especially in matters where legal, regulatory, commercial and relationship considerations need to be looked at together.

Helen has been involved with the New York State Bar Association since 2010. Over time, the International Section became much more than a professional organization for her. It became a place where she built friendships, developed leadership experience, worked with lawyers from many jurisdictions, and found a true professional community.

Her connection with the Section also reflects a constant theme in her own life and career: bringing people, legal systems, institutions and cultures closer together.

As Chair of the International Section, Helen hopes to help make the Section even more active, connected and valuable to members around the world. Her goal is to strengthen the Section as a truly global community within NYSBA — one that is recognized for the experience of its lawyers, the quality of its programs, the seriousness of its work, and the strength of the relationships it creates across jurisdictions.

Nuclear Weapons and International Law 2020: Virtual Conference

A Diversity Committee Cultural Reflection on Black History Month in the United States and Brazil

Black History Month in the United States came officially to a close yesterday, but what it represents transcends 28, or 29, days on a calendar. During the last week of Black History Month, Robson Oliveira, of Demarest Advogados in São Paulo, Brazil, and D.L. Morriss, of Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP and one of the International Section’s two Diversity Officers, joined in a dialogue that highlighted the significance of the celebration of Black history, and the history of all persons of color, the world over. Given the need to translate from Portuguese to English and vice versa, the final product took a little longer to finalize. We are pleased to share that dialogue with you now.
